General Orthodontics Questions
Since orthodontics is a specialized dental service, it isn't the same as going to your dentist's office. We understand that it can be overwhelming and scary to see a new specialist, and you might have many questions. Here are some of the most common questions we receive about orthodontic care.
Do I Need A Referral To See An Orthodontist?
While your dentist may recommend that you see an orthodontist, you do not need a referral to come see us at Legacy Orthodontics! Just book a consultation today.
At What Age Should A Child See An Orthodontist?
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) recommends that children get their first orthodontic assessment at seven years old. This allows us to catch any issues early.
Do You Offer Phase 1 & Phase 2 Treatments?
Yes we do! Typically each phase would be about 18 months each, and in the period between phases our patients will have to wear retainers.
What Happens At The Initial Consultation & Examination Appointment?
During our virtual consultation, we'll discuss your orthodontic concerns and how we can help. When you come in for your initial assessment we'll do scans and recommend a treatment plan.
Is Orthodontics Only For Kids & Teens? Can Adults Get Orthodontic Care?
There is no age limit for accessing orthodontic care. While it may seem like most people with braces are younger, we have many adult patients. It's never too late!
How Long Will It Take To Complete A Full Treatment?
Treatment durations depend on your specific case, what issues we're trying to correct, and which treatment option you choose. We can give you a better timeline during the consultation.

Braces In General
Getting braces can be a stressful experience. You'll have to be mindful of many new things, like what you can and cannot eat, new dental cleaning practices and routines, and more. It's only natural for you to have questions about this process and how to navigate it. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about braces that our office receives.
My Dentist Has Recommended Braces. Do Braces Hurt?
Braces can be a bit painful. When you first get your braces, you'll likely be sore, and your cheeks might get scratched up by the brackets. But once you adjust, it won't be painful anymore.
Will I Be Able To Play Sport Or Be Active After Getting Braces?
You can still be active after your braces. Be mindful if you play a sport involving moving objects like balls. If you get hit in the face, you could damage your braces.
Can I Return To Work Or School The Day After Receiving Braces?
Yes, you can! We recommend taking Advil to help with the soreness you'll experience, but you can get back to living your life right away after your appointment.
Do I Still Need To See My Family Dentist While Wearing Braces?
We recommend that you continue going to your family dentist for regular cleanings, as keeping your braces clean during your treatment duration is essential.
Can I Eat What I Want? Or Should I Avoid Certain Foods?
You should avoid or be extremely careful with certain foods, and our team will help you go over this list before we send you home so you know what to avoid.
Can I Get Braces If I Have Missing Teeth Or A Crown?
Yes, you can! Nothing prevents you from realigning your teeth with a missing tooth, but we can tell you more about your specific case during our consultation.

It's an excellent treatment option for those that don't want traditional metal braces and is a great low-profile option. People won't even be able to notice you're getting your smile corrected! What Are The Benefits Of Wearing Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces?
If you aren't a fan of the look of braces, Invisalign is a perfect alternative. You won't have to feel self-conscious about everyone knowing that you are correcting your smile.
Does Treatment Take Longer When Wearing Invisalign?
This depends on your specific treatment plan. Invisalign can be just as fast as braces.
Are There Any Dietery Restrictions When Wearing Invisalign?
Nope! You can eat whatever you want as you take the trays out before you eat. Just remember to brush your teeth before you put your trays back in.
Will Wearing Invisalign Aligners Cause Any Discomfort?
Yes, unfortunately, there will be some discomfort since you are changing the position of your teeth. We recommend the use of Advil to help alleviate the soreness.
How Often Do I Need To See The Orthodontist While On Invisalign Treatment?
This depends on your specific treatment. However, Invisalign patients don't have to come into the office as often as patients with braces. That's a major advantage of Invisalign.
Will I Be Wearing A Retainer For The Rest Of My Life After Invisalign Treatment?
Yes, just like with braces, you will need to wear a retainer at night to keep your results after Invisalign. If you don't, your teeth will start to shift back to their original positions.
